Have you heard the buzz for Defiance yet? The SyFy channel is getting ready to launch a new show in April that takes place on the remains of St. Louis, 35 years in the future.
The remains? So what happens to us?
As far as I can tell from watching the trailer and a few preview videos, Earth is about to get visited by aliens. Lots of them. And they don’t play nice.
It would seem a war breaks out and Earth gets whacked with a terraforming device.
This allows SyFy to use a few of our city’s iconic symbols to remind viewers that this is Earth, without actually having to come here and film. Looking at the trailer, the only thing left of our town is the Gateway Arch and the Eads Bridge. The rest of town–and the Mississippi River–was blasted away and replaced with an alien city. I guess we don’t have to put that lid on Hwy 70 now.
Being just a bit of a sci-fi geek myself, I know that science fiction usually employs terraforming as a peaceful tool. You take an empty planet, hit it with a terraforming device, and voi la! New planet. It will be interesting to see how they get away with terraforming Earth while keeping bits of the planet, its people and culture intact.
If you have a teen in the house, they might be interested in Defiance’s game aspect. This show will be the first to launch a video game at the same time as the TV show. You can watch it on your TV, the play it on your Xbox, Playstation or PC.
Tune in April 15th on SyFy at 8pm to see what happens to us.
